The art of digital inclusion
Find out what’s been going on as part of Scottish Learning Disabilities Awareness Week.
This week [6 May – 12 May] is Scottish Learning Disability Awareness Week and this year’s theme is around celebrating all things ‘digital’.
Tenants across Wheatley are getting involved by holding events and linking up with partner organisations to celebrate and improve the understanding around the uses technology can have.
Our personalised and self-directed support service in Maryhill has been embracing this theme, with art sessions that give residents the opportunity to creatively express what digital means to them.
Stuart Mitchell, Community Engagement and Activities Co-ordinator, has been running the art sessions with residents at Loretto Court in Maryhill.
He said:
“We’ve had about six or seven residents come along and either take part or enjoy the social elements of the art class.
“By understanding what the term ‘digital’ means for residents, I see my role as taking that information and raising awareness of what it could mean and how it can potentially enhance their everyday lives.
“This could be anything from using the internet to find resources, local community groups and activities and online learning; or using digital equipment to enhance their social lives and hobbies, such as phones, music players and cameras.
“We help residents to lead full lives and technology and in this day and age, technology is an essential component of that.”
Billy Harper, one of the residents who attended the art session, said:
“The class was enjoyable because I got to find out about the interests of other residents and share some of mine as well.
“It’s great to be able to come together and learn from other people’s experiences and interests, and how we can use this in our lives.”
Staff across Wheatley Care have also been working with the Scottish Commission for People with Learning Disabilities to provide residents across Wheatley with access to digital awareness sessions.
