Therapy ponies bring cheer to older customers

Shetland ponies Wilson and Eduardo trotted along to Livingwell sites to bring cheer to our older customers and their families.

The two ponies visited Sandford Gardens and Arrochar Court in Glasgow – and brought two furry friends with them, in the shape of therapy dogs, Winston and Arthur.

Betty McGuire, pictured, who lives in Arrochar Court in Glasgow, said she had waited all her life to meet and touch a Shetland pony and said spending the afternoon with Wilson and Eduardo was better than scooping the jackpot in the National Lottery.

She said: “It’s always been my dream to see Shetland ponies. I think I love them because they are small, and I’m small. It’s been a brilliant day. Winning the lottery has got nothing on this. It’s been absolutely wonderful".

Livingwell services support older people to live independently in their home – as well as provide activities that people can get involved with.

Research has shown animal assisted therapy can improve mood, lower blood pressure and increase physical activity.

Jean McKellan, pictured below, who also uses the service, said: “It has just been lovely. Everyone has been smiling and chatting. It has been a great day”.
